Position Information: Utility Arborist Technicians or Utility Arborists (4 positions)
Status: Contract, 40 - 60 hours per week. Approximate duration June-September, 2017
Work Location: Manitoba

Davey Resource Group (DRG), has immediate contract opportunities for 4 positions in the field of Utility Forestry Consulting located in Manitoba for the summer months in 2017.

The position of Utility Arborist Technician or Utility Arborist will work as a project team member to conduct utility vegetation surveys and data recording along distribution lines for future developing maintenance planning. Key responsibilities will include but not limited to vegetation assessments, data collection using GIS systems and subscribing appropriate clearing prescriptions to the distribution systems. Recommendations that will be developed will include herbicide tree control, mechanical brush control, tree trimming and pruning and full tree removal. The Utility Arborist will hold a high degree of responsibility for completing the surveys individually and will be required to travel throughout the duration of employment.

Job Requirements

  • College/University education in forestry, urban forestry, utility arboriculture, or related field.
  • One of ISA Certified Arborist, ISA Certified Arborist Utility Specialist or Forester (RPF designation) mandatory.
  • 2-5 years’ experience in utility arboriculture preferred. Utility vegetation survey experience considered an asset.
  • Familiarity with typical utility vegetation maintenance programs, treatment methods, and associated equipment in relation to a) tree trimming and pruning, b) mechanical brush control, c) herbicide tree control, d) right-of-way widening, e) hazard tree identification.
  • Basic understanding of transmission and distribution of hydroelectric power systems.
  • Possess good judgment, be able to perform work under minimal supervision, make good decisions with sometimes minimal guidance and supervision.
  • Demonstrated ability to read and understand topographical and utility mapping.
  • Experience using ArcGIS preferred and considered an asset.
  • Willing and able to travel and work in isolated and remote areas of Manitoba for extended hours and durations, potentially with limited “modern conveniences”.
  • Proficient in the operation and use of personal computers, including Microsoft email, Word, and Excel.
  • Demonstrated capability to become familiar with, and adhere safety manuals and other approved operational and environmental practices.
  • Valid First Aid and CPR.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license with a clean required.
  • Required to undertake a Personal Risk Assessment and pre-employment drug screening.
